Luhasoo Landscape Reserve was taken under protection in 1981 as the biggest integral bog in Estonia, almost untouched by human activity. The area of the Reserve is approximately 800 hectares. Luhasoo is of a higher environmental protection and landscape value as an integral ecosystem as well as a habitat of protected species. Particularly interesting are the 15 mineral islands found in the bog, which are mainly less than 1 m high and of a sandy soil. In the educational trail of Luhasoo, diverse raised bog biomes and transition mire and fen biomes can be seen.
