Haanja Nature Park is located in the heart of Võru County, in Haanja Uplands, in the highest region of Estonia – roughly 18% of the territory of the nature park is more than 250 metres above the sea level. The Nature Park was established to ensure preservation, restoration, and development of the landscape and natural biomes characteristic to Haanja Uplands, as well as the historically shaped way of life – the scattered villages, small patches of fields, small pastures and meadows, and the handicraft traditions, which developed due to the poor arable land. Good to know: here, one can find the highest peak in the Baltic states – (318 m) Suur Munamägi; the deepest lake in Estonia – Rõuge Suurjärv (38 m); and several interesting hiking trails.
