Võromaa om üts ummamuudu kotus, inemise kõnõlõsõ eesti keelest tõistmuudu kiilt ja aig lätt tan mäki, järvi ja mõtsu vaihel kah hoobis tõistmuudu – aigu om! Võrumaa is a unique area, the language spoken here is different from regular Estonian and the time also passes very differently here, in the middle of hills, lakes, and forests – there is always time!
The indigenous people of Võro who have been residing in the scattered farm houses found here for many generations still observe their traditions and customs. Their skills and knowledge come from their ancestors, while new wisdom is gained from the community and from life itself. For the life to remain good, however, a good balance of the old and new customs must be preserved.
The people of Võrumaa protect and respect the nature – the land and forests provide the food, which has a unique flavour characteristic to the region, referred to as ‘uma mekk’ by the locals. The riches of the forests help the people get by year-round and animals have always been kept in rural households. The smoke sauna accompanying every proper farm house ensures the best nourishment for the soul as well as the body.
The gutsy and whimsical manners of the Võro people can be marvelled where ever there’s a fair or a party going on, party venues, however, are easy to find by the sounds of accordion and singing.
